    FAQs

What are the differences between Needle Valves and Gauge Valves?

Needle Valves are used to regulate the flow of a substance – usually gas or liquid – through an appliance or system. What is unique about Needle Valves is the inclusion of a small plunger that is shaped like a needle, hence the name.

Gauge Valves are mainly used to isolate a process from instrumentation such as transducers or gauges and are typically utilised together with block and bleed valves.

A Needle Valve is used for fine regulation of flows whereas a Gauge Valve is used (in most cases) for pressure isolation.

Whare different types of Needle Valves?

Manually operated threaded Needle Valves are the most common types, however there are also motorised Needle Valves and Angle Needle Valves. Motorised Needle Valves do not require a handle for manual operation and instead use an electric or pneumatic actuator that connects and turns the plunger. Angle Needle Valves commonly turn the output from the inlet in a right angle instead of horizontally.

What are typical uses of Needle and Gauge Valves?

Needle valves are used for fine control or to metre the flow of the liquid of gas.

Gauge Valves are used to enable pressure between the valve and the instrument to be ventilated once the instrument has been isolated. Thus ensuring that the instrument can be removed safely without any adverse effects from built up pressure.

What Needle Valve should I choose?

In selecting a certain type of Needle Valve, you’ll need to take into account the different requirements for your application. This includes pressure, size, material and temperature. The most common materials for Needle Valves are stainless steel or brass. Most Needle Valves are suitable for both low and high temperature applications. If you require further information about Needle Valves, contact one of our valve and process experts. Winnellie Valve and Process also provides training courses for all types of valves installation and maintenance requirements.

How long do Needle Valves and Gauge Valves last?

Needle Valves and Gauge Valves, like many other types of valves, both require regular servicing and maintenance if you want to extend their service life. There are a few different types and sizes of Needle and Gauge Valves available so it’s best to get in touch with a valve specialist so you can ensure you are getting the right product for your application. For more information on what type of Needle or Gauge Valve you require and tips on how to maintain your valves, contact a Winnellie Valves and Process expert today.
