    FAQs

    What is a Check Valve?

Check Valves are simple devices that perform vital functions to prevent reverse flows and are found in almost every industrial application to act as one-way or non-return valves.

    How do Check Valves work?

Check valves are used any time a process is required to provide one-directional flow. Basically, if a flow turns, the valve will ‘check’ and close, to protect the piping, other valves and process instruments.

What are some different types of Check Valves?

There are five major types of Check Valves available for industrial uses. Swing, lift (piston and ball), nozzle / axial flow, butterfly and tilting-disc. Each type of Check Valve has a specific purpose depending on the process itself. Check Valves can be made from a variety of materials including carbon steel, alloy steel, austenitic and ferritic stainless steel, nickel and titanium.

What type of Check Valve is best?

It depends on what the check valve will be applied to. When working with industrial tools and equipment it’s best to understand the manufacturer specifications of the product you are using, or alternatively speak to a product expert. When it comes to valves, Winnellie Valves and Process will be able to talk you through what type of product is best suited to your needs so you acquire the best-fit valves for your application.

What is the difference between a Ball Valve and a Check Valve?

Ball valves stand apart from other similar types of valves because they use a handle to turn a ball within the valve to either allow or prevent flow through the valve, depending on where it is positioned. In the case of ball valves, if the hole is aligned with the pipe the media will continue to flow through, whereas if the hole is perpendicular to the pipe the flow stops at the valve.

What are the advantages of Check Valves?

The unsung heroes of stopping reverse flow, Check Valves play a vital role in industrial management systems. They are able to make sure of the vitality of one-directional flow and can be used for a large range of liquids and gases. For more information on different types of Check Valves, talk to one of our valves experts or sign up for one of our various training options.

How can a Check Valve help reduce the risk of water hammer?

Water hammer, or valve slam, happens when the flow of a medium reverses before a valve can completely close. Once it does close, the sudden reversal in the direction of the flow and its pertaining velocity causing a hydraulic shockwave that travels close to the speed of sound through the pipeline. If water hammer continues to repeat, it can cause catastrophic damage to the whole piping system. Even if water hammer occurs and the system remains intact, components of the system will become fatigued much quicker and increase replacement and maintenance costs.
